Climate Change: Let’s Act Here and Now

Climate Change:
Let’s Act Here and Now

Help us raise $20,000 to divert an extra 160,000kg from landfill each year.

Help us double our impact and prevent climate disaster.

It’s been a momentous year for the climate change movement. Our earth is now feeling the impacts of irreversible climate change, according to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Even in the most optimistic scenarios where net-zero is reached by 2050, global warming will continue in the short to medium term, reaching a minimum 1.5°C rise.

It’s overwhelming. Climate grief is real, and our political leaders are still moving at a glacial pace to prevent disaster. But let’s focus on what we can do now.

Let’s act locally and immediately. Let’s do what we can to prevent climate catastrophe.

In 2021 Bower Reuse and Repair Centres collected and rehomed more than 160,000kgs of household items. Of the 3,465 requests that were uploaded to The Bower’s Web Booking Tool, the collections team completed 693 truck collections.
The shortfall is obvious. 2,772 requests were declined, a direct result of The Bower’s limited organisational capacity.
Help build The Bower’s capacity to meet growing demand.

The Bower is widely recognized as the Australian pioneers of the Repair Café; where members of the community bring their items to our experts and receive impartial advice and repair tips. While we will always endeavour to provide in-person Repair Cafés, Covid-19 has changed the way we run our Repair Cafés forever. The 2020 and 2021 lockdowns have taught us the importance of maintaining services and support via the digital arena.

We now offer Repair Cafes online: we are presenters and producers as well as facilitators, admin and sales staff, and collection officers – it’s a big shift made possible by the passion of our team who have given so many unpaid hours to continue these programs, using equipment cobbled together through donations and loans.
Help The Bower develop and grow its capacity to deliver high-quality and accessible educational programs.

Our outreach programs continue to grow in response to the demand for assistance. Between September-November The Bower assisted 55 family groups representing more than 200 individuals.

We provided quality service and well-made, sustainable household items for refugees, asylum seekers, survivors of domestic violence, and vulnerable members of the community impacted by the effects of Covid-19.

Help The Bower meet the increase in requests for assistance.

We all know that prolonging the life of our belongings saves energy and cuts pollution by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials.

Reuse and repair reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and allows products to be used to their fullest extent.

Let’s focus on what we can do.

Act now. Act locally. Help The Bower raise an extra $20,000 to double our impact. Let’s prevent climate disaster.

About The Bower

Bower Reuse & Repair Centres is a not-for-profit organisation working to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill through education, reuse, repair and resale.
We sell pre-loved, well-made household items back to the community at low cost. Through our outreach programs, House to Home and HomeKeeper, we assist asylum seekers, refugees, survivors of family violence and other vulnerable members of the community as they transition into safe and permanent housing.

The Bower offers workshops and courses in furniture refurbishing and repair and Home DIY, and hosts Repair Cafes at little-to-no cost.

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community and the support of several organisations.

Thank You.
